Rather than patch a covering that had reached the end of its life, we stripped it right back to the rafters, strengthened every rafter, fixed a new plywood deck and finished the roof with a three layer torch-on felt system. The photographs below were taken by our team on site and follow the job from the bare timbers to the finished mineral felt. The work was completed on 4 November 2026, with a 2 day turnaround.

The old flat roof stripped off
With the failed covering and the old deck removed, the roof timbers were open to view. Stripping back this far is the only way to see every rafter and to build the new roof on a sound base.
Strengthening the rafters
One of our roofers working along the roof as the structural work goes in. Every rafter was strengthened, so the new deck has a firm, even frame to sit on.
Structural work complete
The strengthened timber frame ready for the new deck, with the soil pipe and its fittings still in place along the edge of the roof.
A new plywood deck
New plywood boards fixed across the strengthened rafters. The felt system is bonded to this deck, so it has to be fixed firmly and laid flat, without gaps or steps between the boards.
The deck boarded out
The whole roof boarded out in new plywood, from the wall to the edge, ready for the felt.
Boarding round the pipework
The new plywood is cut neatly round the soil pipe and its brackets, so the felt can be dressed round them and sealed.
The underlay torched down
The underlay of the three layer torch-on felt system laid over the new plywood. Each layer is bonded down with the torch and lapped over the one before.
The finished roof
The finished roof in torch-on mineral felt. The mineral top layer protects the felt beneath it from sunlight and weather.
