The fascia is the board that runs along the bottom edge of the roof and carries the gutter; the soffit closes the gap underneath. When the timber rots, the gutter loses its fixing, water gets into the roof edge and birds find a way into the eaves. Our photographs show the finished result on a pebbledash house: crisp new white fascias and soffits along the full length of the eaves, carrying a new black gutter set to an even fall. Where the roof above is being renewed at the same time, we fit the new roofline before the lower courses of tiles go on, so the eaves detail is right from the start.

We remove the old boards rather than capping over rotten wood, check the rafter ends behind, and fit vented soffits where the loft needs airflow. Colours and finishes are agreed with you before work starts. Your free quote covers scaffold, materials, the new gutters and downpipes if needed, and clearing away all the old timber and plastic at the end.

Ventilation matters more than most people realise. Many London lofts were insulated right down to the eaves, which blocks the airflow that keeps the roof timbers dry. Condensation then forms on the underside of the felt and drips onto the insulation, and it can be mistaken for a leak. When we replace a roofline we fit vented soffits or over-fascia vents where the roof needs them, and we can fit eaves trays so the bottom row of tiles drains neatly into the new gutter.
