Homes and roofs in Camberwell

Camberwell has some of the finest older houses in south London, and a roofer in Camberwell needs to treat them with care. Georgian terraces around Camberwell Grove and Grove Lane sit beside larger Victorian villas towards Denmark Hill, with tall chimney stacks, slate roofs and decorative details, while the streets off Camberwell Road and Coldharbour Lane hold busy runs of Victorian terraces and flats.

Where we work in Camberwell

We cover central Camberwell, Denmark Hill, the streets around Camberwell Green and Myatt's Fields, and the roads towards Brixton and Peckham. Our base in Southwark is only a short drive away. Many large houses here are divided into flats, so tell us which part of the roof is causing trouble and whether it is shared.

Common roof problems in Camberwell

On older Camberwell houses, the weak points are usually the chimney stacks and the junctions around them, the valleys between slopes and the lead on dormers and bays. Original slates can be sound for years, but the nails holding them corrode and they begin to slide. Tall parapets and hidden gutters need regular clearing to stop water backing up under the covering.

Chimney stacks on older Camberwell houses

Tall chimney stacks are part of the character of Camberwell's older houses, and they need looking after. Open joints, cracked flaunching and lifted lead all let water in, and a neglected stack can become loose in high winds. Our chimney repairs include repointing, new lead flashings, rebuilding damaged top courses and fitting cowls or caps.

Planning a new slate roof

When the original slates on a large Camberwell house reach the end of their life, a full re-roof protects the building for the long term. We strip the old covering, check the timbers and fit new membrane and battens before laying the slates, with lead details renewed at the stacks and valleys. See how we approach new roofs.

Gutters and rooflines on large houses

Big Camberwell houses have long eaves runs and high gutters that are hard to reach and easy to neglect. When they block or crack, water runs down tall walls and into window reveals. We clear and repair gutters and downpipes from safe access, and replace rotten fascias and soffits where the timber has failed. Our fascias and soffits page shows a complete new roofline from our own photographs.
