The old felt on this roof had failed, the battens had deteriorated and the slates had started to fail. A patch repair would not have lasted, so we stripped the roof back to the rafters and built it up again with new materials. The photographs below were taken by our team on site and follow the job from the old roof to the new slates. The work was completed on 23 October 2026, and the full re-roof took 3 days.

The old felt had failed
Where the roof met the brick wall, the old roofing felt had torn and broken up. Once felt fails like this, water can get behind it and into the timbers below. This is the reason the roof needed replacing rather than patching.

Old battens past their best
A length of the old timber batten after it came off the roof. The wood had deteriorated, and battens in this state cannot hold slates securely. Every old batten was replaced.

New breathable membrane and battens
With the roof stripped back to the rafters, new breathable membrane went on across the whole roof, then new pressure-treated timber battens over the top, below the roof lantern at the ridge.

Battens set out to the ridge
The battens run in straight, evenly spaced courses all the way up to the ridge. Accurate batten gauge is what keeps every row of slates level and properly lapped.

Fixing the battens
One of our roofers fixing the new battens over the membrane along the long roof slope.

Fibre cement slates going on
New fibre cement slates being laid up the roof slope from the scaffold, course by course.

Slating in along the hip
The new slates cut in neatly along the hip, with the next courses of battens still showing above them.

The new roof taking shape
A view along the scaffold walkway as the new fibre cement slates cover the side of the roof.
